Australia to launch a knockout tournament

Australia to launch a knockout tournament

The Australian Football Association (FFA) has announced plans to launch a knockout competition next year modeled on the FA Cup

The competition will feature A-League sides as well as amateur and semi-professional clubs with the first FFA Cup final taking place in December 2014, providing commercial arrangement can be finalized in time for the tournament's launch.

"The idea of the FFA Cup has captured the imagination of the football community and there's a huge groundswell of support," FFA chief David Gallop said.

"Everyone in the game is keen for this concept to come to life, but the prudent way forward is to Ensure the right commercial and Organisational foundations are in place."

Due to distances between club's because of the size of the country, it is expected that earlier rounds will be played on a regional basis.

The nine State and Territory Member Federations and 10 Hyundai A-League clubs have unanimously endorsed the proposal to stage the inaugural FFA Cup within the calendar year with a Cup Final in December 2014.
