Alderweireld set for period on sidelines

Southampton defender Toby Alderweireld will miss up to a month of action following a hamstring injury sustained in his side’s weekend win at Manchester United

The Belgian international has impressed since joining the club on a season long loan deal from Atletico Madrid and his injury leaves the Saints with just two available central defenders.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman may be forced into adding a defender during the January transfer window, with Maya Yoshida away on international duty at the Asian Cup.

Koeman said: “I don’t know (if we need to sign another centre half), we have to speak about that. We know that Maya will be away for some weeks, we know that.

“We knew already if we get some injuries then maybe it can be a problem but I think in our squad we can do some changes in positions to keep going.”

Southampton travel to face managerless Newcastle United on the weekend, in Saturday’s evening kick-off.
